MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, Marie Antoinette is a stylized, candy-colored reimagining of the life of the ill-fated Archduchess of Austria who becomes the Queen of France. The story follows young Marie (Kirsten Dunst) as she is sent to the opulent but suffocating Court of Versailles to marry the shy Dauphin, Louis XVI, in order to seal a political alliance. Feeling isolated and pressured to produce an heir, Marie seeks refuge in a decadent lifestyle filled with extravagant parties, fashion, and sweets. As she navigates the rigid etiquette and scandalous rumors of the court, she remains largely oblivious to the growing unrest of the French people. The film offers an intimate, modern look at a misunderstood teenager trapped in a golden cage as the shadows of the French Revolution begin to loom.
