MOVIE SYNOPSIS: In the tense early days of a pandemic, a five-star chef and his wife host a dinner party at their bougie colonial apartment despite a nationwide curfew. 7 friends, under lockdown. It’s a premise that may ring familiar in these turbulent times, but Cuarencena is a comedy aiming to hit more than one target. Much like the fine meal and elaborate plates served throughout the night, the story is told in 5 courses, but as booze flows and pressure points get triggered, long-buried secrets and resentments start to bubble up, threatening the fabric of this supposedly tight-knit group. What was meant to be a nice evening devolves into something rawer and uncivilized — a frenetic race to the bottom. Through its mouth-watering imagery and to the beat of jazzy tunes, Cuarencena is both time capsule and Darwinian fable: an irreverent yet big-hearted film about our chaotic era, as well as a universal story about friendship, love and the folly of being human.
